Business Plans for Funding

Most businesses need working capital. This could either be through a loan or investment, or both. Either way, lenders and investors alike will want to see business plans for funding your business. Getting a loan or finding an investor are difficult tasks for any small business to accomplish, particularly when the business is new. So there are a few things you need to consider when preparing your business plan, especially when looking for business startup funding.

First of all, a thorough analysis of your target market is essential to demonstrate that buyers for your product or service exist and that there is sufficient demand for it. A strong market analysis shows lenders and investors that buyers are looking for a solution and are willing to pay for it. So aim to conduct or obtain credible market research for your business and market.

Your business should be feasible from a financial-cost perspective. The business plan's financial projections should clearly illustrate that the business is profitable and has positive cash flow and balance. But equally important, the numbers should be based on historical data and should present both best and worst case scenarios.

If your business is a startup, you obviously won't have historical data. In this case, it's crucial that you find out how other similar businesses in your city or town have performed financially. You would need to do the legwork of finding out this information, and it won't be easy. However, you could find relevant industry reports which provide key financial information and ratios for your industry.

Rather than focusing on your personal goals, business plans for funding should focus tightly on achieving the goals of lenders and investors. In other words, aside from proving you have a strong business concept with willing to buy customers, your business plan should show lenders and investors when and how they will be repaid, with interest in the case of lenders, or dividends in the case of investors.
